Istanbul: The Workshop Bazaar
I travelled to Istanbul for a week in October 2011 as the sun dwindled across Europe. I found myself in the bazaars under the mosques, in the old market place, by the bridges, under tunnels, sprawling out like the city itself, selling hundreds and hundreds of objects. Some of these bazaars I found curious. The pet shop bazaar, with the balding African parrot the vast selection of chipmunks and the workshop bazaar, selling everything from traffic cones to sanding disks were my two favourites – mainly because I really wasn’t expecting them to exist. But they do. Here are some photos from the workshop bazaar, which sells everything from sanding disks to bristles, to traffic cones and beautiful stashes of paint powder.
This Definitely Happened.
One Day, This Will Happen
Somehow, they’re just not as impressive as old punks.
Bronze Memories
Berlin has a lot to remember. And it remembers things very, very successfully.
Small, square bronze pavement plaques pepper the streets of Berlin. There are names in the squares of Jewish families who were taken away by Nazis. The more the bronze is walked over and worn, the more it is polished and kept ‘new’ – rather than a static monument, these plaques are woven into every day life.
